Crime Statistics

U.S. Crime Statistics: Crime, both violent crime and property crime, is a universal concern of the home owner.

In 2002, 15% of the households in the United States (16 million households), experienced one or more crimes as measured by the National Crime Victimization Survey. Thirteen percent of households experienced one or more property crimes, with theft, which affected 1 in 10 households, the most frequent type.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council survey:

  • One in 5 (19 percent) of homeowners without good exterior lighting plan to install it in the next 12 months
  • One in 8 (12 percent) currently without a home security system plan to have one installed within the year
  • One in 11 (9 percent) plan to purchase timers for indoor lights in the next year.

These homeowners are prepared to increase security, as 74.3% of unsuccessful burglaries are attributable to the presence burglar alarms (Department of Justice).
