Casement Windows

Window Style: Casement Windows

By definition, a casement window is a window frame hinged on one side. Casement windows generally open vertically outward for ventilation; and, in most cases, are highly energy-efficient. When the casement windows open outward the screen is located on the inside of the casement window frame. Most casement windows open with a crank mechanism at the base of the frame.

Casement windows are generally found in modern styles, although they can adapt to most any architectural style. They're suitable for a variety of installations, including:

  • Bay windows
  • Bow windows
  • Picture windows
  • French windows
  • Multiple windows for a panoramic effect.

Materials generally used in casement windows:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Vinyl
  • Fiberglass

Look for casement windows with high energy-efficient ratings, such as the Energy Star - which are labeled by the National Fenestration Rating Council, a non-profit, public/private organization. When shopping for windows, understanding the difference between different window materials will help you find the windows that are right for your house style and climate. Doing a little homework in advance can also help you with the best price and the right contractor to install your new windows.
