Swimming Pool Installation

Once you decided to buy a swimming pool, you probably began to wonder what the installation process was like. This article discusses the basic process for pool installation. The article is not intended for use by contractors! Read this if you are a consumer trying to understand the basic steps that take place.

1. Pick out a pool. Don't underestimate this step! A successful pool installation begins with understanding why you want the pool and what type of pool will meet your needs and goals.

2. Pick the site where the pool will be installed. This step should include testing to make sure that the ground at your chosen location is solid enough to hold a pool, and checking with utility companies to make sure that there are no utility pipes or cables in your chosen area.

3. Perform the excavation. This will result in a big hole being dug in your yard. Make sure that your contractor plans to take the excess soil away, unless you want to keep it for some other use.

4. Installation of the plumbing. The contractor now needs to make sure that the basic plumbing system is in place. The plumbing includes the water purification equipment that is so key to enjoying the pool.

5. Build the steel frame. In order to build a pool that will last for a long time, contractors pool builders generally use a steel frame that is wired tightly together to support the pool structure.

6. Build the Pool Shell. Now the concrete is poured to form the shell of your pool. It is bonded to the steel shell to insure that your swimming pool is truly durable and built to last.

7. Curing Process. Following the installation of the pool shell, you will be asked to wet the shell many times per day over the next week. This process is needed to help with the hardening of the shell.

8. Installation of the pool lip (coping) and decking. The coping is the edge of the pool. The decking may be concrete, wood, or stone. Some people have no decking and simply have the pull set within their lawn. While this may be one of the easier steps from a construction perspective, it does create the environment around your pool.

9. Tile the pool interior. Next the tile is placed along the interior of the pool.

10. Installation of electrical wiring. A licensed electrician will hook up the electrical wiring needed to operate the water purification and lighting systems.

11. Installation of Gas Lines. If you pool uses a heater that is gas based, this will be installed at this time.

12. Put up the Fencing. Many cities and towns require that you restrict access to your swimming pool. Installation of fencing and included a locked gate is one of the most common solutions. Check with your local officials to find out what is required in your area.

13. Installation of the Waterproofing. Waterproofing the pool is the last major construction step in the process. Your pool builder will incorporate a sealant that keeps it from leaking and adds an attractive finish to the surface.

14. Fill the Pool! Now you are almost ready. The last step is to fill the pool and have your contractor explain the basics of pool care, so you know how to keep your brand new pool in good working order.
